Known as "Platz der Medien" or "Ueckerplatz," the square in front of the media center in Düsseldorf's harbor was commissioned by the city and designed by artist Günther Uecker as a multifunctional square with an open-air cinema. Until about eight years ago, the Filmwerkstatt Düsseldorf organized the Hafenlichtspiele (Harbor Light Games) here; since then, the semi-circular benches, the projection tower and the playable exterior wall of the Cultural Office have eked out an abandoned existence.
Here, the non-profit company art.vision, a subsidiary of WERFT6, as organizer and with the support of the Cultural Office and the Cultural Department of the City of Düsseldorf, opened the HafenKunstKino - the first permanent installation for film and video art in public space in the state capital of Düsseldorf.
